Halfway through Barrington's 200-yard medley relay in Friday's girls swimming state meet preliminaries, a collective gasp went up in the crowd as the unthinkable had happened.
It looked like the Fillies' top-seeded team had "jumped," or left the block too soon, on the exchange between the breaststroke and butterfly legs.
After the race had finished, the dreaded letters "DQ" flashed on the results board next to Barrrington's name, confirming the bad news for the Fillies.

For a while it looked like snowboarding would take over the skiing world.
Since 1986, snowboarding has boomed, helping ski areas attract millions of new customers.
Snowboards - and the millions of young riders who swarmed ski areas - spurred the creation of half-pipes, jumps, rails and all the other gizmos that now make up terrain parks at ski areas.
The number of snowboarders is fairly steady right now, but we're seeing a lot of new skiers, more than we used to -Kevin McCarthy

University of Tennessee swimmer Giles Smith had a good night in the pool Friday.
The freshman from Baltimore - UT's first black swimmer - anchored the victorious 200-yard medley relay team that had a time of 1 minute, 28.87 seconds and earned a B-cut.
His teammates were Ricky Henahan, Mattias Kahlin, and Mike DeRocco.
The team is working really hard and every day is a challenge. Tonight was my first B-cut and I feel really good. It was an eye-opening experience. -Giles Smith

Noelle Pikus-Pace glanced at the results and beamed as she always seems to after a World Cup skeleton race.
Canada, host of the upcoming Winter Olympics, was atop the podium at Mount Van Hoevenberg on Friday, and Mellisa Hollingsworth's triumph over Shelley Rudman of Great Britain gave Canada its third medal in the first two races of the season.
"I think they're trying to send a message," said Pikus-Pace, the top U.S. finisher after a solid fifth.

Not sure, but there were literally so many options I couldn't have possibly seen them all.
The traps and what not can be linked to triggers of certain things (racer going over them, for example), so that may be an option.
We saw one pretty crazy trap that had a player reversing the motion of a spinning plate that racers had to cross.

Fans can go to the Red Tail finish area as reigning Olympic combined gold medalist Ted Ligety and two-time World Cup overall champion Bode Miller cross the line to a pulsating roar from the crowd.
"There's nothing like ripping Birds of Prey," said Ligety, a three-time Birds of Preypodium finisher.
"Beaver Creek is our only home game and the entire Team gets amped to perform in front of our friends and family. It's not that often where the entire finish area is your cheering section."

Montanans were glued to the TV back in the winter of 1998 as we watched one of our own compete, and win an Olympic gold medal in ariel freestyle skiing.
Now, Eric Bergoust is back home, bringing his own kind of "fear factor" to a local gym, teaching others just how to get it.
Eleven years later, aerial freestyle skiing Olympic gold medalist Eric Bergoust still has it.
